As the name suggests, this little café-come-lunch bar specialises in vegetarian eating, and much of their food is also gluten, egg or dairy free. Now here I am telling you all about what Veggie Mama isn’t, but what’s great about it, is what it is. There, you will find delicious, fresh salads: I’m talking cruciferous silverbeet, hearty chick peas, crunchy broccoli, textured coconut and vitamin packed beetroot. There are warm dishes in the bain marie to take away or eat in, from curries to filo parcels to cauliflower cheese! Or opt for flavoursome, nutty patties that will fill you to the brim but leave you feeling good inside. This is not a vegetarian restaurant that is trying to make up for something, either with fancy shmancy dishes nor with a huge menu. Rather, Veggie Mama offers a regular café style dining experience with a modest list of dishes that are all done really well. A perfect place for local workers to grab a packed lunch, for those shopping the Mt Lawley strip to refuel with a smoothie, or a spot to meet for a meal before a round of totem tennis at Hyde Park. Those heading there for the most important meal of the day should note that eggs are only included in the breakfast menu on Saturday and Sunday, the rest of the week sees just muesli, toast, beans and bagels.
