1. Russian Resurrection Film Festival GIVEAWAY
Eighteen new Russian films will premiere at the 12th Russian Resurrection Film Festival, the Perth leg opening at Cinema Paradiso on 12 November.
A war epic based on a true story, Battalion, will open the festival in Perth. A huge box office hit in Russia, this is the story of the First Russian Women’s Battalion, led by the peasant Maria Bochkareva. It is set in the spring of 1917 at the height of the First World War. The battalion was formed with the idea that women warriors would shame timid soldiers into resuming their combat duties.
As part of the festival, there will be an exhibition by Russian photographer Vladimir Maksimov, who worked on the 2014 film Territory, set in Russia’s far north – where the tundra meets the Arctic. Head here to browse the full program of events.
We have 5 double passes for the Festival to give away. To enter, email your name and postal address to email@example.com with Russian Resurrection in the subject line by midnight Sunday 8 November. We will post the winners their passes.
2. The Freo Rail Bridge Mural Project
Last weekend, a group of 6 local artists came together to paint the pillars of the iconic Fremantle Rail Bridge on Tydeman Road, and the rear wall of the Old Bridge Cellar’s building on Queen Victoria Street, North Fremantle. Curated by Sherrie Wilson Projects, the artworks enliven the area and look super. The project was funded by the City of Fremantle and sponsored by The Butcher Shop and Old Bridge Cellars.
Amok Island, Fudge Works, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Jessee Lee Johns, Fecks and Ayres have prettied up the Rail Bridge, while Italy’s Nemco had the job of painting the Old Bridge Cellars wall. Get down to North Freo to enjoy them in person, and here are some snaps to tide you over in the meantime.
