The Jazz Cellar is one of Perth’s best kept secrets. A little hard to find, this hideaway is located in an alley, through an old phone booth and down a flight of stairs where there is a scattering of tables and chairs and capacity for 100 jazz enthusiasts. Doors open on Friday nights only, when the house band plays traditional jazz while visitors enjoy whatever food and drink they’ve brought along. If you don’t have time to pack yourself a picnic join many of the regulars in ordering pizza from a parlour nearby. You’ll have to pay to get in but considering the great music and BYO environment, it makes for a very fiscally friendly night out. If tea and coffee is all you are after, help yourself to a cup from the kitchen in the corner. Politeness and respect towards the musicians and other patrons is paramount and disrupting others’ listening pleasure with raucous behaviour won’t be tolerated. This is definitely somewhere to come for a catch-up but if you can’t constrain your conversation to the before the show or set breaks then it’s not for you. This means The Jazz Cellar is a magnificent live music venue, where the music is the focus and everyone has a good time. It is also available for hire, along with the band, for that special celebration. Claire.
