The State of the Art Festival (SOTA) will be bringing an incredible day of live WA music to Elizabeth Quay on WA Day Monday. This free, all-ages showcase headlined by Karnivool features Bob Evans, Abbe May, Gyroscope and more.

We Love Perth caught up with some of the rad local artists on the SOTA line-up to grill them about a few of their favourite things.

  Favourite live music venue?

“Mojo’s in Fremantle. It’s just kind of always been there in my life. I’ve seen so many shows there and played quite a few there too over the years. The Rosemount is a bit the same although it looks very different to how I remember it in the 90’s! But they are both venues that when I walk inside I feel like I am home and instantly comfortable.”

– Bob Evans (Kevin Mitchell)

“Badlands has been a lot of fun as a player and a punter in recent times. It’s got the vibe, the sound and the love!”

– Mark ‘Hoss’ Hosking, Karnivool

The China Blue Experiment

Favourite dive bar?

“The Hydey is gone! RIP.”

– Rag n’ Bone

“The Bird is the word.”

– Abbe May

“Indi Bar.”

– Zoran, Gyroscope

“The Scotto. (Is that a dive bar?)”

– The China Blue Experiment

Favourite shop to get threads?

“I only really buy hats… and the best hats are made by Kate & Abel.”

– Abbe May

“The Salvos stores.”

– POW! Negro

Favourite boozy brunch?

“What’s brunch?”

– Zoran, Gyroscope

“Alfred’s Pizza, or The Inglewood Hotel if the Dockers are playing.”

– The China Blue Experiment

“Meeting (best friend, artist and collaborator) Ash Baroque for breakfast at Il Lido Cantina and ‘accidentally’ drinking $4,000,000 of Cava before waking up with seaweed in our hair on some remote part of the WA coastline.”

– Abbe May

Favourite late night lounge?

“The Moon is a wonderful place to metaphorically lunate.”

– Mark ‘Hoss’ Hosking, Karnivool

“Billie H.”

– Abbe May

“The Ellington.”

– The China Blue Experiment

ABBE MAY BY THOM PERRY

Favourite record store?

“Dadas is best, Diabolik is closest, BUT record markets at any given bowls club take the cake.”

– Rag n’ Bone

“Highgate Continental.”

– The China Blue Experiment

“78’s in Perth.  I know it’s changed venues a few times over the years but when I was a young man starting out in a band it was ground zero for finding out about music that was happening around the world in pre-internet days.  These days, if I need a record and I am in Perth, I’d know exactly where to go.”

– Bob Evans (Kevin Mitchell)

“Rhubarb Records.”

– POW! Negro

Favourite late night restaurant?

“Billy Lee’s, you should know that.”

– Rag n’ Bone

“A tie between Habitue, Bread In Common and Bivouac.”

– Abbe May

“The Moon Cafe.”

– The China Blue Experiment

Gyroscope

Favourite way to spend a long weekend in Perth?

“Playing rock shows.”

– Zoran, Gyroscope

“Dog spotting with my massive crush on South Freo dog beach, getting mauled by puppies and chasing dragonflies…. then playing SOTA.”

– Abbe May

“At Scarborough Beach.”

– The China Blue Experiment

Act you’re most looking forward to at SOTA?

“Karnivool, we have been playing alongside those guys for almost two decades now, so much bromance between us and them.”

– Zoran, Gyroscope

“POW! Negro, Ellie Schoen, Katy Steele, Tired Lion, Rag n’ Bone.”

– Abbe May

“Gyroscope. Love those boys, and the energy they give off is intoxicating and infectious! Looking forward to being infected.”

– Mark ‘Hoss’ Hosking, Karnivool
