There’s a brilliant line-up at the 2018 Australian Short Story Festival, which runs from 19 – 21 October right here in Perth at the Centre for Stories.
This great initiative goes beyond the written word, with storytelling on subjects as wide-ranging as crime walks through Northbridge, LGBTQIA+ youth, and how to get into writing, along with an opening address by literary legend David Malouf. Kira caught up with organiser Susan Midalia to chat about the annual festival that celebrates this unique art form.
Perth is a hotbed of creative activity in all forms. The members of Inklings Writers’ Workshop, based in Armadale, have found inspiration in their bushland home to compile ‘Elements of Change’, an anthology of works that will be launched this weekend as part of the Armadale Arts Festival.
Charlotte Guest is a Western Australian writer who has just published her first collection of poetry. Soap is a deeply personal collection of short works that Charlotte wrote between the ages of 19 and 24. Intimate and moving, the book touches on themes of femininity, feminism and family in a beautiful collection that goes beyond a mere coming of age journey to possess broader social relevance.
Claire caught up with Charlotte to talk about the book and pouring your heart onto the page.
Ships in the Night is all about words. Words that are spoken to you, and words that are sung. Ideas are shared, excerpts read and poems spoken aloud at this quarterly gig. The nights are wonderful and intimate, and the next instalment is happening at Paper Mountain on Thursday 19 May.
1. Gillian Cosgriff Ticket Giveaway!
2010 WAAPA Music Theatre graduate (and one of our faves), Gillian Cosgriff, is back in Perth for another season of Fringe World. This time she’s bringing her new show, The Moon and Back to both Noodle Palace and Midlandia for its world premiere!
Ships in the Night is a bimonthly evening of words and songs. It is at home at the Rosemount Hotel, where every two months, you can head down and hear some glorious tunes, and wonderful words from all sorts of different people. The final installment for 2015 is happening on 19 November, so we caught up with Ships in the Night Manager Zoe Barron to find out what’s in store this time around.
