How long has it been since you’ve wandered through the Fremantle Markets? For us, it had been a while. When we were contacted by a few new food stalls in the markets that promised mouth watering treats, we had to pay a visit as soon as possible. From banh mi thit to tacos to doughnuts to cheese, you should go armed with your appetite and a carry bag. Meet some of the stallholders…

Goodtaroll

Two pals James Hood and Nicholas Bent have opened this banh mi stall, where they make traditional, Vietnamese rolls made to order. Choose from crispy pork, BBQ pork, lemongrass beef, grilled chicken or katsu chicken, which all come laden with the typical carrot pickle, mayo, coriander, cucumber and chilli inside a fresh bun that’s come direct from a local, Vietnamese baker. Since they’re made fresh in front of you, it’s possible to hold any ingredients you don’t like. Deeeeelicious.

Eat Street

It’s hard to miss Eat Street, with their large paella pans smack in the middle of The Yard, and the wonderful smells that waft out from them. As well as their different variations of paella (with seafood, chicken and vegetarian options) they serve a mean kimchi and beef bun, which makes a perfect little snack to stop your tummy from rumbling while doing your weekly veggie shop.

Little Chihuahua

Boy do we love a good taco. The latest offering on the ever expanding Mexican food scene in Perth is this great little stall. Choose your filling – steak, pork, fish or black bean – and a salsa, and away you go. There are some other plates on offer too, if you’re taco-ed out already, but we just can’t get enough. Quick, fresh and ever so tasty.

Old Favourites…

They might not be new, but there’s a reason these stalls have stuck around.

Darkstar Coffee is a local business based in Freo, and a darn good one at that. We’ve been singing their praises for a long time and even had one of the owners Tim Fraser featured on our blog in the very early days. Grab a bag of beans to take home and enjoy their flavours all week long.

Levi’s Doughnuts are a bit addictive. They dough is made fresh daily from organic ingredients. Whether you choose plain, chocolate filled or blackberry filled, you will quickly become addicted too.

The Mousetrap is the go to place for cheese. They source their cheeses from throughout the world, have a changing selection, and cut to order.

  • Levi’s Doughnuts are THE BEST doughnuts ever. The chocolate filled ones are other worldly.

  • I live in NY and I was in Perth in December, 2012 and visited the Fremantle Market twice while I was there. I do not have much of a sweet tooth, but I do love a really good jelly donut from time to time. Most of the time however, I am disappointed by them because there is only a small amount of jelly and the donut itself is always doughy or dry. I cannot remember the last time I even had a mediocre jelly donut. I usually take one bite and toss it in the trash,

Well…..I had the most incredibly delicious and amazing jelly donut I have ever had in my life at Levi’s!!!
The dough was sheer perfection…. perfectly cooked and an amazing texture to the dough. I loved the sugar dusted top, but most of all….that jelly!! It was absolutely bursting with the most yummy and luscious jelly. From the first bite, it was escaping from the donut and going down my chin. There was jelly from bite one…right until I finished every single morsel. That donut was just sheer pleasure!!
Five months later and I am home in NY still thinking about and craving that amazing delight. And I do not even have a sweet tooth!!
I may have to return to Australia one day just for those amazing Levi’s jelly donuts. I have a great picture of me enjoying that donut…I wish I could post it here for you to see.

  • The food is always fresh in the markets. The produce is next door so it would want to be. I love the buzz of the place. It hums and is hard to move in peak times but it has real character.
