Canning River Cafe is snuggled next to the Canning River Eco Education Centre (CREEC) on the banks of the Canning River.

I always find it strange when cafes use their beautiful surroundings to bring in diners but then they negatively impact the area with disposable products. The owners of this environmentally-aware cafe respect the local environment and are doing their part to ensure the area remains unpolluted and undisturbed.

Coffee is served in real cups, with takeaway coffee discounts for bringing your own reusable cups, little jars of salt and sugar instead of packets and recycled products when they do need to be disposable.

Whilst waiting for your meal you can explore CREEC, which houses resources and information designed to educate visitors on the river environment and local native animals. We picked up a couple of brochures on local birds and spent some time spotting them after we ate.

Gluten-free food can be tricky to find sometimes, but Canning River Cafe delivered the goods: as a family of gluten-free eaters, we were excited to find something for everyone.

I had a delicious open chicken sandwich that was cooked to perfection, hubby enjoyed a healthy chicken and chickpea salad and the kids were stoked that I let them share some gluten-free waffles alongside their chicken strips for lunch.

Kids have access to a selection of books and colouring in options while they wait. Furry family members aren’t forgotten either – the cafe is dog-friendly and there is drinking water available at the front of the cafe near the outdoor tables.

One of the best things about the cafe is you can enjoy the local area once you have filled your belly, and there is plenty to do for families. The Canning River Regional Park includes a children’s playground as well as some easily accessible bush areas that have perfect climbing trees.

There are also walking and canoe trails nearby, so you could easily spend a day exploring. This area is currently being redeveloped and whilst it is still a fantastic place to visit, once finished it should be even better.

The cafe is open 7am – 3pm every day and 7am – 12pm on public holidays. Bookings can be made at this popular cafe on 08 9358 4884. Find more information on the cafe website.
