The last time I dropped into the Sail and Anchor I was stopped by an old salt: ‘Have a sip of that beer,’ he said, ‘You know why it tastes that good? It’s the pumps.’ He’s right, too. The Sail pride themselves on serving many of their beers the traditional way, and you can taste the difference. It makes sense, as they are passionate about a good brew. Beer lovers will enjoy spying into the microbrewery then retiring to the bar to order a tasting paddle (or two). Choose your own varieties or let the informed bar staff set you up a beer degustation. With a menu so expansive you will be enticed back to try the rest! The beer menu is seasonal and includes drops from all over the country. You can get some fairly serious pub grub here so lining your stomach should not be a problem, either. Upstairs, you can enjoy sitting on the balcony and people watching down the main drag of Freo – always an entertaining way to spend an afternoon! Claire.
