The best thing about being a Freo local is the smell of hops in the air, and know you’re only a hop skip and jump away from your second home, the Little Creatures Brewery. Situated on the waterfront, what started out as a small brewing production of some very delicious beers, has developed into what feels like a global empire. Well…if you are as in love with their beer as we are, you’d think they were taking over the world too. Housed in an industrial style warehouse, the brewery adjoins the beer hall, so you can watch the brewers hard at work as you enjoy a cold one. Serving their range of environmentally conscious beers on tap in either a “little” or “not so little” glass, they include a Pale Ale, Pilsner, Bright Ale, and mid-strength version under the name of Rogers. If you’re not sure which one to go for, the Pale Ale comes highly recommended from this particular writer, as does their deliciously crispy Pipsqueak Cider. The original beer hall has plenty of seating options including long benches, booths, and outdoor tables both at the front, and back overlooking the water. It can accommodate groups, however get in early unless you look fetching in a sparkly hat. Whilst it gets very busy on a weekend, the turnover is rapid, and the beer so good, that you won’t mind waiting at the bar for a table.
The menu comes on recycled paper, in keeping with their attempt for a sustainable environment, and includes nibbles, woodfired pizzas, and some more substantial options. Take advantage of the recently opened burger bar on the waterfront. If you feel the need to stretch your legs, wander on up to the small art gallery on the mezzanine level, showcasing a selection of local artists, or head next door to take home a Creatures souvenir. When its time to leave, consider taking one of their free town bikes for a spin around Freo and soak up the sights. Alternatively, head round to Creatures Nextdoor for an evening tipple.
