FotoFreo returns for another year of stunning images and a meeting of some great photography minds. With the power to evoke emotions of both extremes, photography continues to play a large part in creative expression in Australia, and this year’s FotoFreo plays a large role in Perth’s photography scene. As always, there are so many wonderful picks to choose from throughout the exhibition, which runs from 17 March to 15 April. We know it can be a little overwhelming, so we thought we’d help you narrow it down by highlighting a few great choices, that are sure not to disappoint!

If you enjoy the contemporary scene, then Petrina Hicks’ selected works will be right up your alley, including photographic prints and videos centred around the false promise of perfection. Head into the city and view her pieces at Venn Gallery from 23 March – 28 April. Another intriguing photographer is Samantha Everton with her Collected Works. Showing at Gadfly Gallery from 9-25 March, the deep hues of colours jump out of her photos.

For those who prefer a more traditional style, the beautiful and powerful works of Raghu Rai under the title of My India will be on display at the WA Maritime Museum.

For something different again, the 10 x 10 Australian Photographers exhibition on at Fremantle Prison is based on the premise of 10 of Australia’s leading photographers all taking their photos with the same camera. This project has resulted in 100 exceptional images, along with a book which will be launched on the opening night, 17 March.

One of our longstanding favourites, Hijacked 3, which we mentioned in a Treats post back here, is currently on show at PICA up until 8 April. Showcasing a selection of works by contemporary photographers from both Australia and the UK, it will be run simultaneously with an exhibition in the UK. Keep an eye out for the 400 page publication that goes along with it.

Senescence takes place at the Junction Art Gallery at Politechnic West in Midland, from 13 March to 5 April. Showcasing the work of 6 of its past and present Environmental Art and Design students’ photographic prints, it studies the passing of time and aging, and encompasses colour, monotone and black & white.

If you’d like to get involved in the interactive side of the festival, then take a peek at some of the workshops and talks on offer. While some are a little on the quirky side, our top three are The Landscape in Australian Photography Discussion Panel, the Vintage Glamour Photography Workshop, and the Lomography Workshops with Yolanda Stapleton. However portrait photography, underwater photography and dance photography are all part of the program too.

Be it an exhibition, workshop or talk, each one appeals to an entirely different audience, and for this exact reason, we’re looking forward to checking out some of the events!
