Since starting in 2011, First Comes Love has become the must-visit fair for those planning a party or a pledge who want to take the road less travelled. Although mostly attended by those with impending nuptials, this event is for people planning a celebration of any kind.

On 2 October, First Comes Love will once again take over the delightful Art Deco building that is MosArts. It will be filled to the brim with photographers, caterers, cake bakers, sign writers, florists, stationers, make-up artists, dress designers, musicians… the list goes on.

The October 2016 event will be Clare Johansen’s inaugural First Comes Love fair, having taken over the business from the founders Angela and Leah earlier this year. “I was looking for a business that could offer me some flexibility in terms of looking after my daughter. I wanted something different, something fun and a way to meet lots of lovely people… First Comes Love was the perfect fit!” she says.

With a sassy and creative wedding of her own under her belt, the delightful Clare was the ideal person to take over the business. She got married in a fort in the middle of the English Channel – definitely the aisle less travelled. “We hired the place out for the weekend and all our family came over on a boat.”

“It certainly wasn’t an ordinary wedding,” she chuckles, “so I sought the help of the creative community to ensure the day was filled to the brim with quirky touches and a retro feel.” She spent many hours picking out every last detail, “engaging with talented folk hidden away from the conventional eye.”

Clare all frocked up in her wedding dress.

Clare says that she wouldn’t change a thing about her wedding day were she to do it all over again,  but she wishes that there was an equivalent to First Comes Love in the UK that would have made life a lot easier!

Now that she’s at the helm of First Comes Love, she has already met a tonne of clever folks and is excited about sharing their creativity with a broader audience. “First Comes Love is all about ganging up and showing WA the goodness right here at home,” she says. There will be lots of brand new exhibitors at the upcoming fair with many presenting new businesses. “They are all incredibly talented and the day is going to be awesome!” Clare promises.
