Excelsior Deli is a sleek coffee shop in Shenton Park that has managed to remain a bit of a local secret since its opening in May 2012. Owners and friends, Linda and Robin, have for a long time dreamed of opening up a café offering delicious bites and a decent cuppa. As they both live in the area, when the current space became available they pounced. It also meant that they knew exactly how they wanted it to look, though selecting their coffee and suppliers took a bit of research. They finally settled on their own blend of Five Senses coffee, which has a beautiful hazelnut taste. As for food they have breakfast and lunch on offer, including a couple of specials that rotate each day. Whatever isn’t made in house has been hand picked from boutique suppliers around the city, specifically chosen for the quality.
The fit out is a mixture of bare concrete floors offset by the light, wooden counter and tables, industrial green light fittings, and the very inviting bench seat at the front entrance. What sets Excelsior Deli apart from the rest? The obvious answer is the gelato, perfect for a visit in summer with the kids before heading off to the park around the corner. But the less obvious one is that they’re just happy to be part of the local community, getting to know the locals and providing them with a great coffee spot in the neighbourhood.
