Lex Randolph invites the public to step inside ECU’s Spectrum Project Space (SPS) and examine a collection of artifacts from his ever-growing Identity Museum during a two-week artist residency at SPS. As part of his residency project he is also inviting visitors to create their own Identity Specimen—using a range of familiar and tactile materials presented inside a specimen jar. Each piece in the collection represents an aspect of the makers’ self, and encourages visitors to think critically about how physical bodies contribute to identity.
This residency at SPS comes after Randolph’s first solo exhibition at Paper Mountain, Human Becomings where he delved into new ways of creating and presenting autobiographical artworks, using mainly textiles, watercolours and ink illustrations. During his residency he would like to open this up for visitors to collaborate and explore their own identity using these techniques.
There will be a range of basic drawing and textile materials to use when people visit SPS, including hand-dyed fabrics, yarns and cotton thread, sewing machines, needles, scissors, and lots of jars to choose from. Those who participate can leave their creation in the space, as part of the museum collection until the closing night event, when they can celebrate the one night only exhibition and take their creation home at the end of the night.
In these workshops facilitated by Lex Randolph you will create your own textile anatomy specimen to add to the growing Identity Museum collection.
