Elmar’s Smallgoods

Italian and Chinese immigrants are usually credited for their delectable supermarkets with imported goods. However, no one should underestimate Elmar and Annette Dieren, who migrated from Germany in 1987 and set up their own Bavarian Delicatessen on Beaufort in Highgate. More than twenty years later, and the Dieren’s are still going strong.

Elmar’s offers an array of imported German goods like pickles and conserves and traditional pastries, but these are just distractions (delicious distractions) from the main show: Elmar’s array of cold meats and homemade German sausages. Think Kranski. Think Weiner. Think of the beloved Bratwurst. Salamis, pastramis and black forest hams! All the processed meat you could possibly desire. Be sure to visit on the weekend to catch the sausage sizzle that rivals any Bunnings. And if you can’t make it to Highgate, you can check out their delis in Booragoon, Myaree, or their German restaurant – a compulsory pit stop for any visitors to the Swan Valley. Andrew
