The Mexican trend has been taking over Perth recently, but El Compa is a little different. It’s not trying to fit in in the trendy category, nor does it serve up Tex Mex, this is real Mexican food made by two Mexican chicos who decided to start up an authentic Mexican cantina in Perth. It certainly has a cheerful feel to it, with plastic chairs dotted around bright tablecloths, a tin fit out at the bar matches the religious icons hanging on the walls, the meal is served in the same style of handpainted, decorated dishes throughout, and my favourite bit – the kitschy Mexican tunes playing on the stereo – love it!
Start with a small selection of plates such as the pico de gallo, guacamole, and black beans and chorizo served with an unending supply of crispy corn chips, before trying out the different tacos and quesadillas on offer. The orange marinated slow cooked pork and chipotle flavoured chicken were delicious, and if you’re feeling adventurous give the cactus taco a go, though perhaps best left for refined tastes. El Compa is one of those spots that will inevitably become very popular as the place to go for a quick bite to eat in Northbridge and a mezcal or two before heading on out to some of the great small bars that have sprouted up all over town. Get in while you can still grab a seat!
